Where our shoes are made, designed in Surat, made in China

Posted by Fanture, Surat, Gujarat. Who that is

Fanture shoes are drawn in Surat, Gujarat, and made in China. That line sits on every product page in the same block as the sizes and the weight, and it is one of the three things the homepage puts in front of the price rather than under it. This post is the long version of the line, including the part of the decision that costs us something.

The short reason is that the sole is the product here, and moulding this particular sole properly is a narrow skill. The factories that hold it are in China. We did not find a way to make that sentence flattering, so we stopped trying and printed it instead.

The factory is good at exactly one thing

A CloudFoam™ sole is not cut out of a sheet of foam and glued into a shape. Foam granules go into a single mould and come out fused as one piece. The arch contour of the ArcFit™ footbed and the deep heel cup are in that piece already, and so is the geometric pattern on the underside that stops the sole sliding on a wet floor. The contour comes out of the mould. It does not get added afterwards.

That matters for how the sole behaves under a foot. Granules that are fused rather than poured as one continuous slab compress and rebound individually, so the material is less inclined to take a permanent set in the two places you press hardest. The arch contour is doing a separate job: pressure is force divided by area, so a footbed that stays in contact along the arch spreads your weight across more of the foot and takes the peak off the heel and the ball. The heel cup is what keeps that contour under you instead of letting the foam splay out sideways. All of that is geometry, and geometry only survives if the mould is right and the machine holds it.

What comes out is also light. A shoe at EU 42 weighs around 120 g. That is the only size we have actually put on a scale, so it is the only size we will quote a number for.

Getting the last pair of a run to match the first

Cutting a good mould is the easy half. The hard half is running it for a whole production batch and having pair number one and the final pair be the same shoe. Nobody has ever noticed the successful version of that. What people notice is the failure, an arch sitting flatter than the one in the photograph, or a heel cup that has drifted shallow enough to let the foot slide.

We sell one footbed across all five styles and every size from EU 38 to EU 46. There is no second sole in the range to hide behind. So a mould that drifts is not a bad batch of one product, it is a bad batch of the whole catalogue. Consistency across a run is the thing we were shopping for, and it is the thing we found.

So what happens in Surat?

Surat is where the shapes get decided and the sizes get chosen. The chart runs IND-UK 5–11 alongside EU 38–46 because that is who we expect to be standing in these. Quick-drying and drainage are requirements rather than extras for the same reason, a monsoon is not an edge case here. The person we draw for is someone on their feet for a full shift indoors, on a hard floor, mostly standing still rather than walking.

Design decisions and manufacturing decisions are different decisions, and we make them in different places. We are a small team, and the design half is not delegated.

The range is one sole and five uppers

Because the footbed, the foam and the outsole are identical across the range, the only thing that changes between styles is how much of your foot the upper covers.

Five styles, sixteen colourways, unisex, and one price across the whole range. The clog is more shoe than the flip flop, but not in the place the money goes, so charging more for it would be charging you for surface area. The single mould is the reason that single price is possible to say with a straight face.

What the arrangement costs us

It is not free, and the costs land in time rather than in the specification.

  • Lead times are long. A container crosses an ocean. When a colourway runs out it does not come back the following week, and we would rather leave a size showing as unavailable than publish a restock date we cannot hold.
  • Our international stock sits in China. Orders from outside India ship from our warehouse there, because sending the same pair to Surat first and then back across the same ocean would be slower for you and cheaper for nobody.
  • In India the pair ships free on express, and arrives in 2–5 days. That is the one leg of this we control end to end.

The factory's name is not on this site

We do not publish it. You will also not find a photograph of a production floor here that we can prove is the one our shoes came off, or a story about a visit dressed up as a founding myth. This site already has two empty picture frames on the about page where photographs of the two of us should be, left empty because no such photograph exists yet. The same rule applies to the factory. When we have something we can show you and stand behind, it goes up, and until then the absence is the honest version.

Why the country of origin sits above the button

The declaration on a product page reads China (designed in Gujarat, India). It is in the specification block with the weight and the size run, not in eight-point type at the bottom of a legal page, and the homepage repeats it before the price alongside the heat warning and the returns policy.

The rule we use is simple. If you would be irritated to discover something after the box arrived, it belongs on the screen before you pay for it. Country of origin is on that list for a lot of buyers, sometimes because of a preference about where their money ends up and sometimes out of plain curiosity about who made the thing. Burying it does not make the question go away. It just moves the question to the moment you are opening the parcel.

There is also a self-interested version of the argument, and we will say that part out loud too. A business that prints the least flattering fact about itself in the largest type it is willing to use has an easier time being believed about everything else on the page.

Nothing about the postcode changes the heat rule

Where a pair is moulded has no bearing on what the foam can take once it is yours. CloudFoam™ is heat-sensitive. Direct sun, a closed car, a room heater, a tumble dryer and hot water will all deform it, and heat damage is not covered. Rinse cold or lukewarm, then dry the pair indoors and out of the light. The four ways a pair gets ruined has the full version.

We knew that about the foam before we chose it. A compound hard enough to survive a dashboard would do nothing for the floor you stand on at hour nine, so we optimised for the floor and put the consequence at the top of the page.

Questions we get about this

Where are Fanture shoes made?

In China. They are designed in Surat, Gujarat, where the shapes and the size run get decided, and the finished footwear is manufactured in China. The product page states it as China (designed in Gujarat, India), and the about page explains the choice in shorter form than this post does.

Why not manufacture in Gujarat?

Because of one process. Fusing foam granules into a finished sole in a single mould, at a quality that holds from the first pair of a run to the last, is the whole product in our case. It is not a cheaper way of building a shoe we would otherwise build here, it is the way we know to build this specific sole properly.

Will my order ship from China?

If you are ordering from outside India, yes, international orders leave our warehouse in China. Orders within India ship free on express and take 2–5 days.

Does made in China change the returns policy?

No. Returns are defect-only either way, a manufacturing defect, damage that arrived with the box, or the wrong item, reported within 7 days of delivery. Accepted claims get a free reverse pickup. There is no change-of-mind window and no size swap, which is why the size converter and the fit quiz get more attention on this site than they get in most shops. The full policy is on the returns page.
