Flip-Flops for Wide Feet: Getting the Fit Right Without a Wide Fitting

If your foot hangs off the edge, the shoe is wrong, not the foot. We do not sell a wide fitting, so here is how to size around that.

If you read nothing else
  • 01Your whole foot should sit on the footbed. Overhang means the pair is too small or too narrow, and it also wears the sole unevenly.
  • 02There is no wide fitting in this range, going up one step buys a little width along with the length.
  • 03A slide's single wide band suits many wide feet better than a toe post does.

If you have wide feet you already know the pattern: the foot spills over the sides, the strap digs into one point, and by evening the edges of your feet are sore. That is a fit problem rather than a foot problem, and it is mostly fixable. Start with the fact that shapes the whole guide: we do not sell a wide fitting. The ladder is length only. Everything below is how to work with that, and when to conclude our range is not for you.

Why narrow flip-flops fail wide feet

Cheap flip-flops are cut narrow because narrow uses less material. A thin footbed with a hard strap on a wide foot means the heel and the ball of the foot hang past the edge, so the load that should be spread across a platform is carried on a strip.

The strap does the rest. A thin, stiff band concentrates force on a small patch of skin, and a wide foot pushes outward against it harder. That is where the digging and the rubbing come from, and no amount of breaking in changes the geometry.

What a footbed has to get right

The whole foot on the platform, first. Heel, arch and forefoot all resting on the footbed rather than one of them perched over the rim, that is the difference between a footbed and a ledge.

A strap shaped to the foot rather than cut straight across it. Ours use a shaped toe bridge specifically so the pressure spreads instead of landing on one point between the toes.

And give underfoot, which matters more on a wide foot than a narrow one. A sole that compresses lets the whole width settle in rather than balancing on top of the foam, so the edges stop taking the pressure.

How to size when there is no wide fitting

Measure first, in the evening, standing, both feet, and use the larger number. Sizing from a real measurement rather than from the number on your last pair matters more when the fit is already marginal.

Then, if you are wide or you land between two steps, take the larger step. The extra length brings a little extra width across the footbed, which on an open shape is usually enough to stop the overhang. The ladder runs EU 38 to 46 in whole sizes, so one step up is half a centimetre or more of footbed, and that often does the job.

If a toe post is the part that bothers you, the slide is the answer rather than a different size. One wide band across the forefoot spreads over more skin than a post between two toes ever will.

When to conclude this range is not for you

If you already know you need a genuine wide fitting, a D width or beyond, or you have been fitted for one, sizing up in a length-only ladder is a workaround rather than a solution, and we would rather say so than take the order.

Our returns cover a manufacturing defect, damage on arrival or a wrong item within 7 days. Fit is not on that list and there is no exchange, so this is a decision to make before checkout. Message us with your measurement and how your current pairs fail and we will tell you honestly whether one of ours is likely to work.

Where this guide stops

We do not publish a footbed width, because we have not measured one across every size and we are not going to quote a figure we cannot stand behind. What we can tell you is the shape of the problem and the direction that helps. If width is the main thing you buy shoes on, ask us before ordering.

Frequently asked

Do you make a wide fitting?

No. The range is length only, EU 38–46 unisex, with no separate width options. Sizing up one step gains a little width across the footbed, and the shaped toe bridge spreads pressure rather than concentrating it, but neither is the same as a true wide fitting.

Should I size up if I have wide feet?

Usually yes. The footwear runs true to size, so if you are wide or between two steps, take the larger. On an open slip-on shape the extra room reads as relaxed rather than loose.

My foot hangs over the edge of my current flip-flops, is that normal?

It is common and it is not right. The whole foot should sit on the footbed. Overhang loads a strip of foam instead of a platform and wears the sole unevenly, and it usually means the pair is too small, too narrow, or both.

Would a slide be better than a flip flop for a wide foot?

Often. One wide band across the forefoot spreads pressure over far more skin than a toe post. The footbed and the foam are the same, so there is nothing to give up by switching shape.
